Lives in a browser
Most dictation tools are web apps. You record in one tab, copy from another, paste into a third. Parrot runs natively and pastes directly where you're typing.
One engine, take it or leave it
Locked into whoever built the app. Parrot lets you pick: OpenAI Whisper, Deepgram, ElevenLabs, or local Whisper.cpp. Switch anytime. Or allow us to handle it for you.
Your audio, their servers
Most tools upload your audio to process it. Parrot's local mode means nothing ever leaves your Mac. In cloud mode, you have choice. Use your own API key or use no key at all.
Parrot sits in your menu bar. A global hotkey starts recording from any app. The transcription is pasted at your cursor - no copy-paste, no switching windows.
Local users get Whisper.cpp running entirely on-device. BYOK users pick from Whisper, Deepgram, or ElevenLabs. Managed users allow us to handle all that hassle and they just talk.
An optional cleanup pass fixes grammar, removes filler words, and applies your custom vocabulary and writing style. The output reads like you wrote it, not dictated it.
In local mode, History, settings, vocabulary - all stored in a local SQLite database. Your audio never leaves your Mac.
What we believe
We don't want your audio or transcripts. Local mode keeps everything on your Mac. Cloud mode gives you control over what's stored - and you can delete it anytime.
Use our managed service, bring your own API keys, or run everything locally. Switch between them whenever you want. No vendor lock-in, no data migration headaches.

Early 2025
Started as a personal script to transcribe voice memos. Glued together Whisper and a clipboard hack.
Mid 2025
Rebuilt it as a Mac app. Added global hotkey, auto-paste, and support for multiple transcription providers.
Late 2025
Added cleanup engine with custom vocabulary and writing style. Introduced local mode with Whisper.cpp and Ollama.
Early 2026
will be launched publicly. Dictation history, search, and the onboarding wizard. Cloud mode with OpenAI, Deepgram, and ElevenLabs.
